Since 2016 Dr. Alberto de Lozar works as senior scientist at the DWD (German National Weather Service). His main research topic is to improve the forecasting of convective storms: from the assimilation of radar and satellite data to the development of the microphysics. He has been directly involved on development of the new operational forecasting model of the DWD, the ICON-RUC, which is aimed for a seamless transition from nowcasting to numerical weather prediction. During his scientific career,Dr. de Lozar has published papers across a broad spectrum of journals including Science, Physical Review Letters and Geophysics Research Letters with over 2000 citations.
报告摘要:
In August 2024, the DWD launched the new regional model ICON-RUC at the operational mode. The first evaluation shows that the new model clearly outperforms the standard operational ICON-D2 model for convection in the summer period, while the ICON-RUC shows some deficits n winter. In the presentation, we show how to improve the representation of clouds and convection in the ICON-RUC model by a better microphysics scheme and by using combined measurements from different observational systems (e.g., radar and SEVIRI).
